Sheldon saved Leonard by pushing him out of the elevator before the can exploded, breaking the elevator. Bravo! And never ratted him out; that part seems very anti-Sheldon, though, especially when he later appointed himself president of the building tenants association.

S3 is when TBBT starts its decline with the addition of Bernadette & Amy. They'd have been fine as short-term supporting characters, but making them long-term main characters was a major mistake.
