The recipient of The Royal Society of Tasmania Doctoral Award for 2023 was Dr. Tobias Staal a geophysicist focussed on the understanding of the deep and shallow structure and properties of the Antarctic continent. He applied a novel approach using computational and statistical methods to infer the key characteristics of the subsurface structure of Antarctica.

Tobias Staal is a geophysicist with backgrounds in geology, art, and engineering. He is currently a research fellow at the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science at the University of Tasmania. He focuses on innovative approaches to understanding our planet using computational methods and information theory.
