Pilots shows off their skills re-enactmenting dogfights for crowds to honour the pioneers who flew above the trenches during the First World War almost one hundred years ago

It has been a century since the First World War began but the sights and sounds of war aircraft are recreated regularly at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in the US state of New York.

It is one of a few aerodromes around the world that puts on air shows inspired by WWI aviation, this one complete with dogfight re-enactments and costumed melodramas.

An original American Curtiss Jenny biplane can sometimes be seen there flying alongside reproductions of French and German fighter planes.

Many of the planes that made it through the war were destroyed as surplus, so originals are rare.

The aerodrome has six First World War original planes and more than a dozen reproductions.
