THE FINAL EPISODE IN THE SERIES 🚨

It’s the 8th November, 2016, just past midnight and Donald Trump arrives at Grand Rapids, Michigan, for his last rally of the election. He’s bleary-eyed and feeling the strain, this is his tenth rally in the last two days. After flying through three time zones yesterday, he has now flown from Florida to North Carolina to Pennsylvania to New Hampshire, and finally here to Michigan. His one last shot at those Blue Wall states. He tells the crowd, ‘We're hours away from a once-in-a-lifetime change, Today is our Independence Day, the day the American working class is going to strike back, finally.’ Yet, going into election day The New York Times only gave Trump a 9% chance of winning.

In the final episode of The Rest is Politics: US’ series on How Donald Trump Won the White House, listen as Anthony and Katty tell how election day unfolded and analyze the result. Why did Donald Trump win the White House?

I've really loved this series. I really appreciate the insights and analysis of the behind the scenes build up to the election, brilliant narrative from both Katty and Anthony. I appreciate Anthony's candour and self reflection. Thank you both.

I was a staffer for Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2016. I was pretty junior and on the ground in one of the more important states then but I feel I had a good amount of insight into what was going on and how we were feeling. Despite all the turns that happened that cycle, we never once seriously considered that we were going to lose. Definitely an issue of groupthink but at the same time it wasn't just us. No one in the world thought Trump would win. However, I remember there was a moment, about a month before the election, where I felt that we may have been a little too confident - we decided to move campaign resources away from our important state to Texas and Arizona.

Election night was horrible, it felt like being transported into some other world. People were crying and throwing up in the campaign office I was in. I thought that all the news channels were getting it wrong and it will change in due time, but reality hit the next morning. Looking back at it, we took the rust belt way too for granted and paid the price. At the end of the day, it was a razor thin margin in those blue wall states so every little decision mattered. That day also energized me and the rest of the Democrats to win every campaign we could the next 4 years.

Very interesting to hear your viewpoint on the other side Anthony. It connects some pieces I didn't know 8 years later.

I fell asleep around midnight, I woke up the next morning and saw the I cried like a baby. I am not American, but am a permanent resident and had lived in NYC for decades. I cried my eyes out like someone had died. Figuratively someone/something had died.

I'm listening to this podcast, and all of the anxiety came flooding back. It's like I'm reliving 2016. I'm not a very religious man, but I hope and pray that we don't have another 4 years of this crazy man!!

This episode makes one fear even more that the disaster from 2016 will repeat itself.

This was an exxcellent four-part series. I learned things I didn't know before and re-thought some things I thought I did know. Thanks to everyone who took the time to make it.

Man you two are a great team!
Wasn’t sure that reliving Trump’s victory was where I wanted to go, but I’m glad I went there with you. It’s a lot of stuff this political junky didn’t have. Great work!

Both Katy Kay and The Mooch continue to shine on the podcast with great insight and analysis. Katy Kay I love your modest British demeanor.❤ Mooch, are you really Italian?..Britain can claim you and you could fit in well in our culture. Joe- East London UK 😂🇬🇧

Anthony clearly has PTSD from his work for Trump 😂😅

I'm optimistic that 2016 will not repeat, in 2016 Trump was thought to be a breath of fresh air and would drain the swamp.
In 2024, Trump brings a stench who would replace swamp with cesspool.
New voters, educated, women and black voters will elect Harris and save America.

My first memory of the Trump administration was on Jan 21 ... at the CIA Headquarters in front of the "Memorial Wall" honoring CIA agents killed in action. Trump complained about media coverage of the size of the crowd at the Inauguration; noted that he had been on the cover of Time "14 or 15 times." Said "Trust me, I'm, like, a smart person." Assured those attending that "we're going to start winning again, and you're going to be leading the charge." I remember thinking, Good Lord, it's started already, 4 years of whining and bragging and bullshitting.
