Should you buy a Mr. Hobby Creos PS-289 Airbrush?

Let's take a look at the Creos PS-289 by Mr. Hobby. This airbrush is a dual action, gravity fed airbrush with a .3mm needle and nozzle. This makes it an excellent choice for a general use airbrush. Within this airbrush review I'll go over all the data I'd want to know before buying an airbrush including spray characteristics, air speed, and controllability.

Good review, similar to how I find it. I just got one.Quality seems very nice (with some minor non-critical grits). I find the angled air line odd as it differs from my other brushes. For covering large surfaces it's nice but it is clearly about 1cm/0.5" or so longer than most of my other tools (like H&S, Iwata HP-B etc). Distance makes it more difficult for details. I hate MAC valve too. I have adjustment in my quick connect anyway. MAC valve just gets in the way.
The cup shape is very nice! Very small amount of paint gets where you need it. Not so with every airbrush, especially with brushes that have that large cup.
Back handle is a bit annoying to screw on: if you have it even a bit angled, needle will not hit the stopper hole. If it had a larger needle stop it would be better.
I like softer feel, I could use even softer trigger than this is capable of. But that's a preference.
For the price, a great brush!

Great review, looks like an awesome airbrush. I'd love for you to try out and review the 270 from GSI Creos. I have an Iwata Revolution, and I am itching to try it a gun that gives me some finer lines with less effort.

Just got mine from Spraygunner for $77 for 1/35 armor and 1/48 aircraft and it looks from what I see online that I am going to be happy. Great vid.

So good to see all the positive reviews and comments about the 289. Your video was excellent.
My PS 289 is giving me fits. I have tried everything …Lacquers, oil based, acrylics, all types of recommended thinners for the various paint and all types of consistency, all types of air pressure regulated at the compressor, and also by the Mac valve, and I can’t get it to consistently work. I’ve taken it apart many different times, completely, stripped it down, looking for blockage, or whatever. Can’t find anything. What happens is when I apply air and then pull the needle back. Nothing happens, more needle, nothing happens, and then all the sudden boom. The paint comes out in a surge. If I use the needle limiter, I can get an initial good result but, after a minute or two, it goes into the same funky, no paint, more needle, and then boom/splatter. so frustrating.
If anyone could offer any insight, I would be highly appreciative😊

Hi,
should i add an iwata hp-cs to PS-289 ?
using for scale model painting

Proud owner of one, together with 771 and 270 which is a real beast. Honestly I prefer 270 over 771 for detail

this is my favorite airbrush. the angled air valve is more ergonomic for me during longer sessions. i even added an iwata mini filter which made it way more comfortable.
i like that it comes with a crown cap equipped since that is a $20 upgrade from iwata.the only issue i had was the round button trigger dug into my fingertip after a while. i upgraded it to a squared micron style trigger from a takumi eclipse and i also replaced the lid with a chromed hp-cs eclipse one since its easier to clean. even with all the upgrades the total was cheaper than an msrp eclipse hp-cs while adding hp- ch features and quality.

Thank you Mark. This is my go to brush although I swapped the .3mm needle and nozzle for a .2mm . I think you can go up to .5mm with this airbrush which makes it very versatile.

I love how it feels and responds and I appreciate the mac valve as I mainly use a portable mini-compressor which has no adjustability.

I also own a H+S Evolution which I like but not as much as the PS-289.

That's more than enough airbrushes for an intermediate artist like myself😁

Great to see my main airbrush being used by an airbrush master👍✌️

Fantastic presentation!!!! Dear sir please allow me a question : can i remove the “Head Cap” in order to clean it each time so as also to remove the needle from the front and also not to unscrew the tiny and fragile nozzle ? That suits me better, just like works the iwata eclipse .

Nice review. I have all of the GSI Creos range and rate them highly. Was wondering if you happened to pick up the Giraldez Infinity. Would love to see your review of that with the new internals

I wanted to get a Micron but choked on the price. Per your most excellent review I got a 771 instead. As you had said the quality appears equivalent my to Iwata at about 1/3rd of the price. I got it at Spraygunner for $175 compared to $475ish for the Micron

I wonder if Iwata found out they were pricing themselves out of the market and are producing these as a value priced alternative. Great review as always. Thx

What needles are compatible with this brush?

the only problem for this comparing to iwata is that Mr Hobby Creos has more pieces when you have to clean it. The PS 289 might be a pain in the butt when you need to take it apart. Maybe that's why it cost less? idk

Excellent information, one question....can the O-rings withstand strong solvents?
