Xpeng Motors P7 exclusive interview!

Robert Llewellyn talks to Dr Brian Gu, President of Xpeng Motors, to get exclusive inside information on the Xpeng P7 smart sedan electric vehicle ahead of the launch event today for the P7.
Could this be the first Chinese electric car to truly rival the Tesla Model 3?

With the Rear Wheel Drive model achieving an NEDC range of 706 km (439 miles) and the All Wheel Drive putting down 0-62 mph (0 -100 km/h) in just 4.28 seconds, this is a genuinely impressive long range electric vehicle.
Prices range from 240k - 370k Chinese Yuan which is roughly equivalent to £27k - £42k or US $34k - $52k  /  €31k-€52k.

When you are so successful you have a second camera for your conference call.

China have very little experience in internal combustion engine technology, so they are paying attention to electric vehicle technology with much importance because everyone is same playing level.

I like this company a lot but 700 km on 80KwH of batteries. HOW THE HELL. I would like to see the actual motorway range because this has 20 mph city driving with all kinds of regeneration at stop lights written all over it.

Next up the Polestar 2? I have personally been looking foreward to that one. But in these corona days it is difficult to test drive.

The more competition in this segment, the better for our progress! I'm sure Elon agrees!

I have to say. The Chinese have come a long way. From making copycat knockoff cars to now making really good electric cars. Keep this up guys!

Thanks for another great interview, and another first too, Robert. Dr Gu clearly has a lot of drive, and achieved a lot with his company. Both those cars are demonstrating some advanced, forward thinking and useful features. I do think we people have tended to ignore the Chinese market, and or consider it backwards. With the tech both these cars are demonstrating, the global market can expect some interesting developments in the months and years to come. I would like to see these cars close up, and test-drive them too. Incidentally, the Xpeng G3 was spotted being driven 'incognito' in Oslo, as reported by TeslaBjorn. Xpeng will be another import player in the market.

Like you Robert, I hadn't heard of Xpeng Motors but WOW just about sums it up.

The speed at which this start-up has brought not one but two models to market is astonishing. Their achievement has clearly been helped by the fact the Chinese government is pushing so hard to get the infrastructure in place, as Dr Gu acknowledges but nonetheless it's quite amazing.

The P7 looks gorgeous and let's hope that it won't be too long before Xpeng EV's are available to buy in the UK!

Latest news is that Xpeng will come to Norway as first country in Europe. P3 in autumn 2020, P7 around easter 2021. The down side is that Xpeng have chosen CHAdeMO, not CCS. In norway (and in most of Europe) there are no CHAdeMO chargers supporting more than 50kW while CCS that has become more a standard there is 50, 150 and 350kW chargers (and even a few between). Clearly this will be a huge market disadvantage !

Please ask about towhitch, heatpump and ccs charging when you interview them next time. These are of importance in nordic countries.

Holy smokes, an EV with a 323 mile range at a maximum cost of £24k? That's insane.

Brian Gu; what a lovely gracious man. Don't know how you wangled that interview Robert, but well done and I hope you do get to go to China for your test drive one day soon. 👌👍

I love how much he emphasised the "autonomous driving technology" and how everything was done "in house, ourselves"... definitely no need for Tesla to sue them for stealing the Autopilot code then...
