Johnny Hartman's Lush life is clearly the definitive version of this song.

What a great privilege to have shared the same planet as Johnny Hartman and Billy Strayhorn.

Mesmerizing any time I hear him. Stops me dead in my tracks.

goddamn! his stance and delivery! so poised and causal. oh and his voice is like being wrapped in a huge warm fluffy blanket but that goes without saying, because it's johnny hartman.

GREAT! Too bad the video is mostly lost, but at least we have the music all the way through.

What an artist - thanks for sharing.

La sua voce porta dentro di se la storia di un popolo che grazie alla sua voglia di esistere ha fatto enormi sacrifici aiutato dalla fede.

Thanks for posting this, I hadn't heard it. Hartmann was a master. By the by, Strayhorn was only 19 when he wrote this, seems impossible.

Sinatra attempted this song and did a fine job...as the surviving bootleg shows...i hope you guys have heard it....but he decided not to go into it....at the time and sadly...left it out for good...like he did to so many great songs....why..no one will ever know...of course you cant record them all..but the junk he was recording..after 62...with a few exceptions...could have been songs like Lush Life....
