American University is a mid-sized private institution located in the residential district of Washington, DC. It combines a beautiful campus, also an accredited arboretum with the energy, opportunities, and culture of the nation’s capital.

Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University has always been defined by its “groundbreaking spirit.” Even before women were allowed to vote, they attended AU. When Washington, DC, was still segregated, African-Americans were welcomed as students.

Popular majors include International Relations, Business, Political Science, and Communication.

Considered to be a politically active and diverse community of thinkers and researchers, its hands-on approach to learning has been a cornerstone of its foundation.
