When Linus has sold his cattle, his loneliness takes over and his reality slowly turns into a nightmare. He starts seeing glimpses of his deceased women. She asks about her son, but he don't dare to admit he hasn't been able to take care of him and he also didn't survive her absence. The guilt only becomes bigger and materialises into an entity that tries to lure Linus into a deal.

Since we see this from the farmer's perspective, it's hard to see this as an unhappy ending. As bleak as his last days and moments were, he got what he wanted on the terms that were possible. This is a nuanced and creative use of the horror genre. Very heartfelt, however grim.

So technically the father is the only remaining alive in this family? First his wife died leaving the dad and son. Then he said he couldn't take care of the son by himself, and dont know at this point if his alive or dead only revealing in the end. In the end, the father died, the one burning. The scene shows that he was looking at his burning body alongside with his deceased wife and son.

i think the Afrikaans translation of the word "Vonnis" is more fitting. it means Sentence. as in Jail or Death Sentence.
