Children are drawn to the practical life area. My daughter woke up and was busy with these activities for 40 minutes this morning after the rotation. My son enjoys them as well, but for a much shorter period of time, for about 5 minutes. Practical life helps children to gain independence with activities such as pouring their own water, pouring a bowl of milk, feeding themselves with a spoon, or scooping food. It’s also indirect preparation for reading and writing. They work on left to right tracking needed for reading. They also works on the pincer grasp and hand muscle strength needed for writing. If your child is young, start out by providing dry pouring activities, then move into water pouring.

I’m a trained Montessori 3-6 guide. I’m also and a mother of two. I share how I do Montessori at home with my children. Montessori can look different for every family. I share what Montessori in real life looks like for my family. Looking through picture perfect Instagram and Pinterest can sometimes make Montessori feel unattainable. Montessori is so much more than just about perfect shelves and expensive toys, it’s a way of interacting with our children and helping them to gain the independence they desire. It’s also about helping them to make meaningful contrubitions and gaining a feeling of accomplishment. I share how I teach my children and what Montessori in real life looks like for us. I love Montessori because the Montessori method of hands on learning can inspire creativity, independence, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. I share practical ways to do Montessori at home. I also discuss other topics related to motherhood and child development. If that interests you, I’d love to have you join our community!
