Nexx Garage Door Opener Review - 6 Months Later

Our 6 Months Later review of the Nexx Garage wifi-enabled garage door companion device. In this review we take a look at the main features of the device, overall performance, reliability over the past 6 months and whether or not this is the device you should get to help make your garage door a smart garage door.

I've used the Nexx garage system for a few years now. Some thoughts:
1. You can't be chatting on the phone and use the app at the same time. I had a friend stop by my place to get something out of my garage, he called when he arrived. I thought I'd be able to chat with him while I raised the garage door. No luck. Not a deal breaker, just be aware. Also the proximity detection sounds great, but I live in a townhouse and if I walk in certain rooms of the place, it would trigger my garage door. So nice feature that I can't use.
2. The sensor system originally shipped with the Nexx garage sucks. As in the video, it's tiny. Alignment is critical and with all the vibration/seasonal heating/cooling the magnets get out of alignment easily.
My sensor finally just quit working after about a year. I contacted Nexx, and while helpful, went through a lot of troubleshooting that was eventually worthless since my system was already out of warranty. Thanks Nexx for the patience and explaining things thoroughly. However, maybe start the troubleshooting with a question about warranty status.
Save yourself the headache. If you've troubleshot the problem and you think it's a sensor issue, just goto their web page and buy a new sensor.
3. Which brings me to the last point. The sensor. Nexx must've learned their lesson. Instead of a tiny sensor and double sided tape, if you purchase a new sensor it's at least 4x's the size. You can also purchase adjustable brackets to mount the sensors easily.
Overall, it does the job, has some nice features.

Love my 2 NexxGarage units, accessed through Alexa (via an outdoor Echo Dot near the garage) and IFTTT (so I don't need to enter the security code required by Amazon). The speed is excellent - far faster than a keypad, especially when your hands are full..

I just installed mine yesterday and it works pretty good. I don't see where it is HomeKit enabled, but it does use Siri shortcuts and I can ask Siri to open and close the door just fine.

I've had mine less than a year and it's already malfunctioning, opening my garage door when not wanted and then not reporting it as being open. I go out in the morning to find it's been open all night. Unplug the Nexx unit and have no issues so I know it's not the opener itself.

Update: It turned out to be the door sensor. So, even though the door was closed, the unit thought it was open and sent a command to close the door at 10pm (scheduled for every night), actually opening it.

Great information. I don't necessarily think creating a smartwatch app is all that necessary. With regards to a garage door opener, I think using a geofencing trigger and duration setting for the garage opener makes sense. For example, I know that Alexa has geofencing and duration "timer" capability in its routine skill set. So when you enter the geofence, garage opens. Set a timer to wait for about a minute or so before triggering garage to close again after you get home so you don't need to pull your phone out of your pocket at all. Perhaps you could show that in a later video.

I just set my Nexx Garage up today! It took me about 10 minutes to set up wifi on the device and then with only 4 inches of clearance behind my lifter, i got the wires plugged in in about 15 minutes. Tested it out and the app opens and closes the garage door! and best of all, i'm not walled into apple's ecosystem and have hand's free secure voice enabled control of my lifter! I haven't gotten the sensors hooked up yet as that an wait for the weekend.

Can it be programmed to close the door if left open for certain amount of time?

Confused though:you mentioned it would be great not having to press on the app to open or close the garage door if your hands are busy...doesn’t the app/device have geolocation so that when you’re in close range go your garage it opens or closes if you drive off? This is one of the main reasons I want to get it for the convenience factor of not having to press anything to open/close my garage door. Thanks!

how much of a power drain is this on the cell phone? Is it lurking in the background sucking battery power? Has anyone else seen any issues with power drain?

Have you gotten this to work with Google mesh wifi? Mine isn't able to config and find wifi :-(

According to the Nexx website they now support Siri.
