The VNL series comes standard with the 13-liter Volvo D13 engine, while Daycab and VNL 400 models can spec the 11-liter Volvo D11 as an option. The 15-liter Cummins X15 is also available in the VNL series.

Both the Volvo D11 and D13 engines feature Volvo’s patented wave pistons, a unique design that helps burn fuel more efficiently. Fuel is delivered by a proven common rail fuel system with proprietary features that improve fuel delivery precision, cut weight and reduce noise.

The Volvo VNL is also available with the Volvo D13 Turbo Compound (D13 TC) engine that utilizes a mechanical waste heat recovery system to capture wasted energy from the engine’s exhaust. The result is an additional 50 horsepower fed back to the crankshaft and an improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 6.5 percent.

“Volvo’s D11, D13 and D13 TC engines offer an incredible mix of power and efficiency,” said John Moore, Volvo Trucks product marketing manager – powertrain. “For customers needing even greater fuel efficiency, our XE, eXceptional Efficiency, downspeeding packages are available and paired with the Volvo I-Shift.”

Have 2020 volvo vnl760 midroof. And I have yet see this so called d13tc motor. My volvo didn't come with one and didn't see a option for it. They been talking about this motor for past two years and I have yet to see it.

Detroit Diesel engines use turbo compound also way before Volvo decides to.

This sounds more complicated making the engine more complex, all their gonna do is boast about how great it is, sure but what happens when the system fucks up, ya money out of our pocket

Volvo had a turbo compound 12 litre engine in The FH500 in 2002 and it's not that good on fuel. They have an annoying whistle and Scania had a turbo compound engine in the 124L 470 before Volvo had it. They didn't last in Europe as they were expensive and complicated. They NEVER delivered on fuel and probably never will. In Europe 500hp is the norm for long distance now but 600+hp engines are very common now in Europe and Volvo offer an FH16 with up-to 750hp and over 2, 600lbs ft of torque and Scania have a V8 R and S series with up-to 730hp and around 2, 600lbs ft of torque. They are surprisingly good on fuel too as they can maintain long journeys in top gear more of the time and the big 16 in the Volvo and 16.4 litre in the Scania are very understressed.
