In my opinion, the best summary of Savonarola was given by the great Pope Pius XII, in 1950, in an allocution to the leaders of the Dominican Order: "One thing seems certain, and that is the moral integrity, the pure intention, the good faith and the apostolic ardor of Savonarola… a man who passionately loved the Church, who venerated the Vicar of Christ, even when his name was Alexander VI, to whom he was perhaps the only person to be truly faithful. He did not act of fanaticism or ambition, but with a clear theological understanding of the situation, appealing to and basing himself on the provisions of canon law. As such, he was a calm, balanced man, master of his action and enlightened in his decisions.” Quoted by L’Osservatore Romano, Nov 5., 1969.

Thank you. Learned alot, and certainly relevant to our day with the effects of 2013 Conclave

I've heard of Savonarola's extreme actions before and was unsure of him, however, I found this account of him very fair.

In William Thomas Walsh‘s book on Isabella, I recall that said monarch was considering sending troops to Rome to assess the situation with Alexander VI.

0:00 This man lived from 1252 to 1498? You would think a significant part of the story would be that he was 246 years old... Lol. I know it's an error but it almost made me fall out my seat.

I actually have a portrait of him in my room, my brother got it for me from Florence. 😊

Ah yes, this was at that time before St Ignatius de Loyola vs Sr Magdalena de la Cruz, who was eventually outed as having demonic visions.

I do find this sermon to have painted Savonarola a fairer picture of what he is than most documentaries out there. It is true that the Florentines have lived in excess. But I cannot abide by the fact that he claimed that his visions are divine. That's usually a sign that they are diabolical in nature... Or at least invented. I'm the glad the Catholic Church has become skeptical of visionaries after Magdalena de la Cruz was outed.

Thank you for this sermon Father.

Wish we could have these days the same fervor that he stirred back then. To have a group of young men go around shutting down strip clubs and bars on Sundays would be quite epic

Savonarola lived from 1252 - 1498? 😯 He had quite a good innings then, dying at the age of 246. 😬

Concerning "The Futility of Astrology" by Savonarola: From the first sentence, he mistakes the claim of more astute astrologers; namely, that the celestial bodies do not cause - but, rather, correspond - to human affairs. Likewise, that, if the stars, planets, points, and sky are, in some fashion, gods themselves, there is, nonetheless, no god like God; El-Elohim. It is the failure to accord God the highest place, alone, which makes the daemons, effectively, demons; or angels who have fallen, and lodged themselves behind the darkened looking glass; since, whoever abuses the gifts, displays ingratitude to The Giver, and is abused by them, in his own turn. Catholics, too, as we well know, are still accused of being pagans in disguise, by other Christians, for reverencing and praying through Mary and the saints; while Muslims would say even The Son is an idol. In any case, Girolamo may take the matter up with Christ, whose star the (pagan) magi followed, - to be present at Our Lord's side, almost before all others.

Maybe not a heretic, but certainly a dictator

It's disturbing to me to hear people laughing at certain parts. I don't believe they're laughter is in the Spirit of God.
Dear sweet heavenly father, I ask you grant them repentance, in Jesus Name.
