one the biggest mistakes of my life is choosing Bali over Sri Lanka. Well, the airline website kept failing to book my flight to Colombo. And I made the stupid assumption, that it was fate telling me to go to Bali. While Bali is paradise... I’d still find Sri Lanka more exotic. (There will be another time).

We have been to Sri Lanka four times and our holidays there were all wonderful experiences. Yes it’s very affordable, varied accommodation choices and the food is delicious. Our experience in Yala National park though …..was absolutely dreadful. I guess it was a busy July day and jeeps were everywhere! Many drivers would not turn off their jeeps and we’d be left, listening to their engines and not nature. It was such a frustrating experience that we asked to be returned to the main town and end the trip early. We have been on jeep safaris in Africa which were breathtakingly beautiful… but sadly our Yala experience was very disappointing. We expected to be out in nature but sadly we were overwhelmed by jeep traffic & noise. Beyond this only one negative experience .. (in four trips there) we LOVE Sri Lanka because of their warm, hospitable, welcoming people. Sri Lanka may be close to India but it is NOT India. From our travels …best time to visit Sr Lanka would be for the festival held in Kandy called the Esala Perahera. Check it out on YouTube. An absolutely stunning display of culture, dance, music and celebration of faith. We were hoping to return to Sri Lanka this coming summer 2022… but the country is in major major political and economic chaos now: it is sad to see this beautiful country falling to its knees ….as the world has seen happen in Myanmar with the military take-over last year. Two beautiful countries have been turned upside down. Out thoughts and prayers are with the people of Sri Lanka & Myanmar. We miss your hospitality and kindnesses. Hold strong.
