I just had thyroid surgery last week. In March my physician's assistant kept telling me that there was nothing wrong with me despite a large lump on my neck and problems breathing and swallowing. Between march and april I went to her at least 4 times. She finally did an ultrasound. It showed multiple large nodules on my thyroid. At my post op Dr's visit yesterday my surgeon said the right lobe of my thyroid was about the size of his fist and wrapped around my trachea. Advocating for myself probably saved my life. Thank you for all of your videos Dr Kaveh, tbey really helped me leading up to my surgery.

I have experienced that more than once. It is sometimes difficult to stand up for yourself when you are being told that there is no evidence that there is anything wrong. I had a carcinoid tumour in my lung for two years before it was found. During that time, many, many tests came back negative. Some would make it very clear that they thought that I was just bored and looking for attention!!

My Dr friend says I'm a "bad patient" 😅😂 I asked why, and she replied because I know as much as doctors do 😂 well, I wouldn't say that, but I do have to admit I do my own due diligence by listening to my gut and researching possible reasons for whatever is going on, and then present that to the Dr. She said she wished everyone would talk more about what they truly felt was going on in their bodies, not just leaving it all for a dr to figure out. After all, nobody knows better their bodies than people themselves do, they should just pay more attention to any changes going on 😊

This video is spot on! Couldn’t figure out why I was suddenly feeling worse as each day went on in August through today. I had a prescription filled in August, same prescription I’ve been taking but noticed it was a different manufacturer. Thus far, it seems I was having an adverse reaction to the manufacturer of this specific medication. I’ve been reading up on how manufacturers fillers can differ & cause an adverse affect on some of us. From my previous research, they have been consistently changing. I went through all my meds & manufacturers, they’ve only differed with certain medications. My roommate keeps saying just go to a different doctor, I will but I need the information to know what to discuss with a new doctor, even my current doctor. A doctor has switched an anti anxiety med a few years ago, it gave me an adverse reaction, I had a seizure in the ER from that one.

Dr. Kaveh, thank you for educating us! I wrote a very long comment and lost it. Short version: A scientist in almost your area (San Diego) Stephanie Venn-Watson has brought an amino acid, C-15, to the attention of scientists. She has been studying dolphins for the Navy off the CA coast and another pod off the FL coast. She found major differences between the pods and attributes them to C-15 amino acid. This C-15 has always been there but no one paid it any attention once the omega threes came on the scene. Turns out the C-15 is very important. Our bodies don't manufacture it, we must ingest it. I have asked my Dr. to read up on C-15 so we can discuss next month at my visit. You may find the papers out there interesting too.

I think I feel very comfortable communicating with my Drs. I'm diabetic, have severe spinal stenosis and have afib. so, I've been around Drs for a while. Thank you for encouraging people to stand up for themselves!

I was blessed with a fantastic PC that advocated for me and even went with me to several appointments with specialists. I was diagnosed with Lupus at 19, and he was my PC since I was 18. Again, I was so lucky.

I recently had an appointment for a surgeon because I was told I needed surgery.
His staff was so rude and sarcastic.
Then my appointment got canceled the same day! Yes, Friday before Labor Day.
I called the following week, tho my instinct said if his staff is rude, he most likely will be.
Sure enough. Rude, sarcastic, and God complex.
Fortunately, I didn't need surgery because I wouldn't have gone with him. I didn't feel my health care was his priority, and I was not looked at as an equal adult.
Thank you for educating us!

I just got home from surgery. Been listening to you for weeks before and I want to say thank you. I explained the confidence, certainty and control thing and they allowed me to have some control in holding the mask. I already had the confidence in them as a team. The certainty was impossible under the circumstances but… I did speak to the anesthesiologist beforehand and I told him that if there was any wiggle room or if a judgment call needed to be made, which way I wanted him to go. And he did! I could have woke up with a sternum to pelvis incision or a laparoscopic robotic surgery with 6 small incisions. Bc of comorbidities I was at high risk for not having the robotic surgery. But the advocacy and the prayers of myself, my PCP, my family and friends, all made it happen. Thank you for your part in helping me be strong enough to advocate for myself in strength and respect.
I do have more control over my health care.
Thank you for helping me realize that in my life.

My mom's last Dr made her so stressed and uncomfortable, hell i was with her and he made me nervous that he said that she had mild Dementia (telling her to remember 3 words and wasn't able to remember them) After she left the exam room and went to the lobby she instantly remembered the words. I was never so happy when she fired that Dr. The Dr. she has now couldn't believe that the Dr said that and how wrong he was

I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma and put on asthma inhalers. I got worse. I asked the doctor if it could be a food allergy. He said, NO, and refused to test me for them. As soon as I could afford to, I paid out-of-pocket to go and be tested at a Naturopathic clinic. They discovered I had a severe allergy to eggs, and that I'd been experiencing mild anaphylactic shock, NOT asthma!!!! My decision to go to the Naturopathic clinic probably saved my life!!!

I always make notes before I see my doctor, it helps me make sure I don’t forget during the whirlwind meeting. When going into surgery I don’t let them give me anything until after I’m in the OR, if everyone is doing something not just waiting that actually makes me more confident.

Dr I have been honest with my doctor and it doesn’t help. I have extra skin from losing over 100 pounds and I have break out under breast, stomach, thighs, and buttocks skin folds and the doctors I’ve seen doesn’t advocate for me properly with insurance to get skin removal covered. I am 66. I have friends in their 50’s and younger that insurance paid for their skin removal. I think past 60 we seem to be written off. I still work full time and take care of myself. It’s depressing that I have friends that have been helped but me… no help. I’m a medical biller. I work hard but seem to be disregarded while insurance covers others not only for skin removal but also for gender change. I’m losing my faith in some medical professionals. Thank you for your information. You always make sense.

I definitely advocate for myself and my family! But they retaliate and refuse to see, fill medications, etc. I still e re fuse to be hollered at, ignored like my appointment is pushed behind others even though mine is before theirs, so many others! It’s amazing these medical people get away with what our patient rights and the law states they can’t!

I truly appreciate the advocacy you do for patients. I can prove im a victim of willful dental malpractice and the fact doctors can be eristic to cover up their error so that nobody believes me AFTER, even with proof has thrown me in the depths of depression that has affected every aspect of my life. A literal fight for my life. You restore my strength to keep fighting.

I used to work for an amazing oncologist. Im sad he passed away because he truly helped so many people and was a wonderful caring person.
I miss our insightful caring conversations.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insights. It is good to know there are good people like you in the medical field.

I feel almost totally ignored at my Internists. When I press a point all I get is pimped out to other doctors. I feel like I'm getting worked, like I'm just 'gris for the mill!'

Ok, when my doctor suggested I get P....a medication for strengthening my bones, I did research on the medication and found it wasn't something I would use. I told the medical person who called wanted to know if I wanted that medicine, I said "no". I take it that I am the person who decides what's important for me !

I have learned the hard way to always listen to my instincts. My neighbor was in a very bad accident and his arm was being held together with a halo and pins. The whole arm. I was helping his wife take care of him and cleaning it etc., , , One afternoon I was home and thought I heard a yell, but thought I was just nuts. He had fallen and I don't know how I heard him yell. It was winter and my house was closed up. I did consider him for a sec but just thought I was hearing things. It happened again but I was in the shower and thought I heard a yell, but faint like the other time. My husband was outside and had fallen. I will never ignore what I think I've heard or felt again.
