Detchable aircraft pods have been thrown around in the us for a while. in 1950 the US experimented with the Fairchild XC-120 Packplane. Consolidated, Convair, and other companies considered it.. Convair for example was looking at a detatchable passanger pod for the B-58 bomber, allowing up to 5 passengers to be carried instead of its bomb as a supersonic VIP transport. the idea of being DROPPED by accident though didn't appeal to many officers.
