Datacamp Vs Dataquest? Which Data Engineering Course Is Best - Learning Data Engineering Online

Learning data engineering online is hard enough.

So which track is best, Datacamp vs Dataquest?

Don't take my word for it. Please check out both Datacamp and Dataquest's free sections.

Both do provide some of their initial courses and sections for free. So try them out with the courses below.

Datacamp Data Engineering Track

Now, I come out more positively for Datacamp, which I also have an affiliate link for. So I will share both below and allow you to pick which one you like best.

I preferred datacamp only because it had a more realistic view of what a data engineer does. I imagine at some point dataquest will have to also create similar courses if it wants to compete. If this occurs, I will happily make a follow-up video rexamining the two.

Both have data engineering course

About me:
I have spent my career focused on all forms of data. I have focused on developing algorithms to detect fraud, reduce patient readmission and redesign insurance provider policy to help reduce the overall cost of healthcare. I have also helped develop analytics for marketing and IT operations in order to optimize limited resources such as employees and budget. I privately consults on data science and engineering problems both solo as well as with a company called Acheron Analytics. I have experience both working hands-on with technical problems as well as helping leadership teams develop strategies to maximize their data.

The most thorough and comprehensive review I have seen!

half way finished with dataquest datascience path and I already have a data analyst job lined up internally with my current company (also delving into data engineering/powerBI skill paths). highly recommend for people who don’t have the patience to listen to video’s and would rather learn at a faster pace. Project oriented learning is also the primary focus with dataquest which is a great way to learn while building a tangible portfolio to fall back on incase you don’t have your own projects yet.

I’ve been working through DataCamp’s Data Analyst, Data Scientist, and other tracks. They’ve been great for me as a primary source for taking in new material and concepts before trying them in projects. It’s nice having an outlined approach.

Glad to hear their Data Engineer track meets your approval for the concepts. I’m looking forward to starting that one soon

I love how Datacamp is much more comprehensive, but the breadth, combined with the time it will take to complete, make it impractical. By the time a person gets to the end, the (very specific) modules at the beginning will be practically lost...unless a person uses the skills throughout. It reminds me of taking advanced statistics in my first year of college...and then not touching it again for the next three years. It was all lost by the time I could use it.

I'm in DataQuest right now, finishing up the first section's Guided Project. I've had no Python or SQL experience but this video makes me want to switch to Datacamp after those sections haha. I know I'll be learning a lot but it sounds like Dataquest isn't enough, from the perspective of someone already in the field. Thanks for your insight!

I will echo the request for a review of Udacity Data Engineering Nano Degree. Im currently taking their data science with python in preparation for the data engineer nanodegree. Great content appreciate it!

I'm on the Data Science track at DataQuest. I personally prefer their teaching style and really enjoy learning there.
The Data Engineering track is not finished yet (it's somewhere stated on the website), so I asked them when they are going to add new Data Engineering content. Unfortunately, probably not in the near future, because they are focusing on the Data Science track now...

Great reviews. I'm currently working my way through Datacamp's course and am really enjoying it!

DataQuest appears to focus on fundamental baseline knowledge (Python and SQL) whereas DataCamp repackages these fundamentals as intermediate-level knowledge and then differentiates itself by delving into data engineering specific knowledge.

Hellz yeah! I'm actually about to start my track in DataCamp for Data Engineering, perfect timing!!

BTW, I think your link for DataCamp may be broken (I.e. not clickable)

From your screenshot at 1:48, I can see Datacamp have since changed the Data Engineering course and trimmed it down somewhat. It's now 57 hours, 17 courses and 1 project. No mention of learning AWS Boto or MongoDB anymore.

I'm going through DataCamp's courses, and I haven't really looked at Dataquest.

I'll stick to DataCamp and IBM, the rest of what I need I'll learn on the job and through documentation.

Finally 😎😎... The much anticipated review... Thank you so much for this @SeattleDataGuy, if I may ask after reviewing DataCamp do you think it covers the roadmap which you earlier suggested?

Hi SDG, I hope in the future you can cover the niches within data engineering e.g. data modeling. Also, are there courses that give a more in depth view of pulling data via APIs that you can recommended? I am trying to transition to data engineering so please excuse my ignorance.

Thanks once again, and well done on getting the 10k milestone. 👏

I caught this video just in time I think. I was just about to pay for Dataquest and was unaware of Datacamp. The membership fee for Datacamp is quite a bit easier on the wallet so I'm going to give a couple of their free courses a try before deciding which one to join.

He didn’t show that in DataCamp after 3-4 min video they teach you to code through the experiences.. I am planning to start DE track, and I’ve done DS track there.

Hello Ben. Great video as always. Do you think completing both Datacamp and dataquest data engineering paths is enough to land an entry level data engineering position for someone that doesn't have a comp sci degree but rather an applied math/stats degree? Thank you for your videos.

As someone who has been writing scrapers Django websites I thought I knew quite alot about python, but after going through the python stuff on datacamp Im definitely changing up the way I code. But Ive still got alot to go through so I have no idea if it's any good yet
