Matt Damon will play Odysseus in Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming epic “The Odyssey.” He will appear alongside an expansive cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo.
The excitement for Christopher Nolan's next film is already building at an enormous pace. The Odyssey isn't due to be released in cinemas until July 2026, but when the first images of Matt Damon's character in full costume were released earlier this year, fans already started envisaging an all-timer of a film.
The Odyssey follows the Greek champion Odysseus on his tumultuous journey home after the Trojan War, showcasing his encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and finishing with his reunion with his wife, Penelope. The story was first scribed by the ancient Greek poet Homer over 2,000 years ago and is one of the oldest stories still enjoyed by modern readers.
The Odyssey marks the third collaboration between Nolan and Damon. Damon has had a supporting turn in the seven-time Oscar winner “Oppenheimer” and played a small role in Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar.” Previous reports had indicated that Tom Holland would be the lead in The Odyssey, but this look at Damon complicates that. Unless the film is told through the lens of another character, or if Holland plays a younger Odysseus in the narrative (you have to expect some timey-wimey shenanigans with a Nolan movie), it now seems that Damon will be the central figure in the film. And he wears that armour well – bring on Odysseus’ 10-year journey home.
For now, that’s all we have. It’s yet to be confirmed who any of the rest of the cast will be playing. But by the looks of things, cameras are almost ready to roll, ahead of that 17 July 2026 release date.
