Savotta - our history

Savotta has been around since 1955. Originally established in the village of Pylkönmäki, about 30 kilometers from our current HQ in Karstula, under the name of “Pylkönmäen Nahkatyö” (Pylkönmäki Leatherworks).

The first gear we made back then were strong leather mittens, bags and backpacks for loggers. This sort of gear was in high demand, as logging sites and the lumber industry played a significant role in Finland paying war reparations to the Soviet union after the wars.

Most of you probably don't know, but the word “savotta” is Finnish for logging site, or any sort of huge, arduous labour.

In these nearly 70 years our company has been through a lot, and we have made a whole lot of gear since those first humble leather mittens.
