What does it mean to be a flower vase?

When I was 10 years old, someone saw me and told my mom that I am a "huā píng" (花瓶) — a flower vase — which, by the way, is a Mandarin way to insult a woman, saying that she is a hollow object that is good to look at, but otherwise useless. But then, isn't it wonderful to be a flower vase? To have hollow space? To be capable of carrying beautiful things?
