If there is an expectation of payment (whether monetary or other) it's not technically working free anyway like you explained.. It's more of an investment to gain work for the album (as you stated) but then again most won't have Rick Springfield lined up and rent/bills never hit the space bar, so there's that in the equation also 😉🤙🏼🍻

I was once told that an aspiring engineer should never do anything totally pro bono, because you don’t want to be known for doing stuff for free, but you are free to set the cost as you please (giving the example that a student engineer recording student bands at university probably can’t charge £1000 for a song, but they probably can insist on having the studio costs covered, their meals and maybe a couple of drinks) - which is pretty similar to the give and take you proposed, but targeted for those just starting out

Agree on that, so basically a taste for free but never the full meal
Also and since a long time now, périple request free stuff with return VISIBILITY ( and as a favor ) a load of artist ( and basically unknown are asking this, like we will be the next big hit, big thing etc….) and that’s it is a NO GO,

Also Sometimes if they do not have money, I can trade materials, gear, return favor ….
