Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first Independence Day address after securing a historic third term, said the government was committed to big reforms as he focused his speech on crimes against women, the need for a uniform civil code and aspirations of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Hinting that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be brought soon, PM Modi, in his 97-minute speech, said a secular civil code was the need of the hour to free the country of religious discrimination. The atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh also found a mention in PM Modi's address.

Amid the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Prime Minister called for speedy investigation of crimes against women while asserting strict punishment for those who commit such "monstrous crimes".
