In this video, I walk through a preterist interpretation of the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24. In this interpretation, up through verse 35 addresses the question of the temple's destruction, and 36 changes topic to Jesus' second coming (parousia), which he continues teaching about through chapter 25.

Look again at verse 36. What is the first word? What kind of word is that and what function does it serve?

Analyze this example text:
"All the new items for you computer work station, the hard drive, dual processors, video card, and expanded RAM will be delivered by the end of the month. But the video card only God knows when that will arrive."

Now answer this question:
Even though all the other components will arrive by the end of the month, when should you expect the Video Card to arrive?

Now go back and compare how "Peri de" is translated to English in Matthew 24:36. "However concerning", "But concerning", "But".

It should be obvious, as in the example text above, that when you see, "However concerning", "But concerning", or "But", that it is making an exception to or excludes certain parts from the list of previous mentioned items or parts.

"but"
conjunction
1. used to introduce a phrase or clause contrasting with what has already been mentioned
preposition
2 except; apart from; other than.

So the idea that he was talking about the generation that would see the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple (which was the main questions being asked) should not be conflated with the "parousia" (a presence, a coming). because the text (Matthew 24:36) clearly makes an exception to the parousia from the other signs mentioned. It does this by starting the sentence with the conjunction "but" or "However conserving".

In essence the Lord was telling them that their generation would see all the signs and fulfillment of Jerusalem and the Temple and the Priesthood, and the Nation being destroyed, the Mosaic age - EXCEPT for the "coming" ... which no one but God himself knows when that will arrive. For the "coming" there will be know signs or tells. - and this is what the Lord said in the rest of Chapter 24 and the first half Chapter 25. It will come like a thief in the night when you least expect it. So be ready every day and night that you live by being found doing what the Lord want you to be doing. - which is living a life of righteousness separate from sin; plus loving and serving God.
