The best Mini reinterpretation is by far the first "new Mini" from 2001. Perfect proportions. It still looks absolutely fresh. Nobody would guess that is is more than 20 years old.

The is not a Cooper S, that is a Cooper SE. The current SE has the same green "S" logo. That's also why it doesn't have an exhaust and that the grille is mostly closed off.

The black wheel arches have been in the Mini since 2002 model, I find the exterior pretty bland without them honestly. And I agree with the taillights being weird, the current generations round taillights with the Union Jack flag are awesome.

Everything is great other than the rear. I hope they go back and fix their mistake! Rounded taillights would fit the car so much better!

This is the electric model, which is a different chassis from the ICE version. The ICE version G56 will be an evolution of the F56 chassis and will retain the clamshell hood and proportions but with design elements from this car like the lights etc.

What a mess at the rear. All the car has soft lines and they put a triangle! It's worse than a chinese ripoff. I agree with you, the Union Jack headlights is just a genius idea.

NGL I do kinda like the attempt at aggressive angular taillights. However, it’s true that the rear doesn’t match the front.

I think all that smoothness remove a bit of the classic Cooper styling. It just lacks the little details that makes it a MIni. Now it's prtty much a chineeese EV like so many others. I would definetely go for a 2023 or older if i was to buy this car.

The new taillights are a great example of a design idea getting in the way of reality. The new lights are harsh and angled like that to maintain the union jack look, but as you mention, the rest of the car is about smooth and rounded corners. As a result, the push for the union jack cross bars got in the way of the design language of the rest of the car.

Also, as someone who has owned a number of MINIs and still has an R53, the reason the taillights look weird and out of place is because they are integrated into the hatch (like an SUV) instead of the body (like a hot hatch and every MINI before it). As a result, the lights as pushed in from the edges of the car and makes the overall car design look fat and large instead of small and "mini."
