This gunbarrel sequence is hands down the best! Michael Kamen's score was dark and foreboding. It prepared the audience for what was to follow.
I wish Dalton did a couple more 007 films.
In my mind's eye, he was the Bond described in Fleming's books.

These 20 seconds capture the vibe of the film that follows better than any other gunbarrel. The intensity of the searchlight music and the killer guitar tone on the Bond theme that follows go perfectly with Dalton's stride. He captures the sudden prey-to-predator transformation in that casual stroll to trained killer stance so well. Also, yay for actual gunsmoke. It all just embodies the grittiness and peril of the (still) darkest Bond film.

This is THE best gunbarrel opener of the lot. For Your Eyes Only comes close to it, although I do also like the 1970s twang of Live and Let Die. But Licence to Kill's oozes Latin flair and immediately tells us that we're up for some unprecedented high octane James Bond action with the striking orchestra, heavy uptempo drums (like an increasing heartbeat) and Latin guitar! It's so badass. Accompanied by the "new" hard ass Bond in Timothy Dalton. Definitely introduced a new era of modern action in Bond films. Brilliant!

Timothy Dalton's performance, the overall dark and violent tone, and the originality of Michael Kamen's score were the hallmarks of Licence to Kill. When you heard this cue and this gunbarrel, you instantly knew that this was *NOT* gonna be your typical PG-rated experience. This film was PG-13 for a reason...
