I solved the problem 2 dimensionally, I saw that three matches made one triangle, I had enough matches for two, so if I double the number of pieces, I'll have enough to create 4, so I could equally split the matches down the middle so the parts are all still equivalent; and I'd have enough to create 4 triangles. I guess if it ain't broke...

I solved it in a different way, 2D. I made an equilateral triangle with 3 matches then made an identical one but flipped inside the first triangle. This made 4 small equilateral triangles at the corners and 1 parallelogram in the middle. So this achieved the purpose of 4 equilateral triangles.
