Brazil suspends social media platform X | BBC News

X, formerly Twitter, has been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to name a new legal representative in the country.

Alexandre de Moraes ordered the "immediate and complete suspension" of the platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines.

"Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes,” said Elon Musk, X owner.

The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation.

It’s appalling that a man who acts like a 5th grade can’t understand that if he wants to do business in another country, he must comply with the laws of such country. Brazilian judicial system WILL NOT BENT OVER to Musk. Either he will respect Brazilian laws or he’s out, simple as that. I'm Brazilian and I'm just saying: the law about internet/social media is quite similar to the European Union law. That's not censorship it's just a spoiled guy challenging the Supreme Court of a country with 212 million people. We stand with our Supreme Court, we are in the BlueSky now.

Just like in the US, Elon Musk has been trying to meddle in Brazilian elections for quite some time, even going as far as paying the fees for the defense of candidates who had been convicted by the electoral justice. X also closed its office in Brazil last week, so that they could operate in a way to escape Brazilian laws.
Our Supreme Court gave them 24 hours to appoint a legal representative in the country, which they refused to do, and that is how X was blocked in the country. ALSO, in order to ensure the payment of innumerous fines applied to X since the beginning of this year, Starlink also had its accounts blocked.
And that's how you deal with foreign billionaires colonizers.

Hi, Im Brazilian 🇧🇷, and I am here to say what most peaple here on Brazil think about this.
1. Most of the peaple think they are losing their freedom of speach, think that is a first step to a military dictatorship because Alexandre de Moraes was the only person to decide what to do with the plataform
2. Peaple are VERY ANGRY, not only because of what I prevesly said, but they dont ban online cassinos or acess of internet from prisons (idk much about this part)
