Because Patrick Stephan missed that goal, the oilers could win in overtime. They finished 1 point in front of the Blackhawks in the standings, who finished last and got the 1st overall pick in that years draft. They selected Patrick Kane. So, the story goes, if Patrick Stephan scored that goal, Patrick Kane would be an oiler, which could have changed the course of NHL history. That would’ve started a Oilers dynasty in the early 2010s, and so much more. The alternate universe where Patrick Kane is an oiler fascinated me. Think of how many seemingly small things would be changed from that one missed empty net goal.

I know everyone laughed at Patrik Stephan, but if you look closely at 0:53, the puck suddenly makes a little jump in the air and over Stephan’s stick, that’s why Stephan missed it, I know many people are going to disagree with me, but it wasn’t really his fault (at least not only his fault), the ice was probably uneven and that is why the puck hopped.

I remember that Dallas game vs the Oilers very well, it was 2007 and I remember watching it with my parents. I remember Dallas being down 4 to 1 or 4 to 0 at one point and coming back and scoring 5 straights. They would eventually win in OT, but this had impact on Patrick Stephens career as he would finish up in Dallas and you would never see him in the NHL again. Yes, he should have shot it sooner there's no question about that. However, to me it was made to be such a bigger deal then it actually was.
