As an intermediate artist here, both a student and a self-taught aritst, I personally think that tracing is one of the ways that makes a person better at art as an, it will help the person study the anatomy and how specific objects are drawn. However, in order to avoid copyright violations and potential repercussions, the source must be FULLY credited (and not giving full credits to the original creator will just make you look dishonest) if possible- it is also best to ask permission from the original creator. Even if this does not apply to all artists, there are many ways for artists to learn how to draw and study art concepts; tracing is simply one of them, despite the fact that many artists and art admirer have misintepretedit.

Type 3: draw over the base with circles to analysis the shape and anatomy then attempt to draw it yourself.

I only trace something for when I'm figuring out how a character is supposed to look (like if it's a 3d model from a game, it gets really hard to see all the details) so I trace the lines and shadows I can see, then paint in the simple shadows to better render the drawing. I recommend this technique if you want to make fanart of something and want to match the style, or if you want to find a way to simplify the design into your own art style.
So far, I'm trying to draw Sephiroth from ff7 remake. And let me tell ya, there's a lot of detail on that man 💀

Anyway, tracing can be good if you want to match an art style or find a way to draw something in your own style. Referencing it can be just as good, if not, better.
Still don't trace something and claim it as your own, just use it for practice!

I mean from a side, "tracing" is actually helpful and good. You can trace *some parts, not the full art* for improvement ! But don’t trace the lineart, trace the base of the part and after make the lineart by yourself ! It’s like taking a reference of an irl image, but with a drawing instead. As an artist, i sometimes traced for poses, anatomy and hands improvement (but i never posted them lmao). After i don’t know much, all i know that is 100% sure is what i said in the start. Yet i am not sure if we have to credit the original, if you know please tell me ! Let’s just say this was a little tip for begginners or anyone that are artists.

Fact: if it were a real reference, such as flowers or an animal, it would be rotoscoping, which new artists believe is tracing, then there’s actual tracing, such as drawing over someone else’s art and changing is a bit, rotoscoping would be drawing over a cat and breaking it down into pieces, just studying how to make the base and it’s often just for anatomy practice
