Personally, I enjoyed the loot boxes from OW1. They basically handed them out like free candy. And if you had been playing the game for a while, you were bound to get duplicates. So the in game currency you’d get was pretty cool cause then I could actually get a skin I wanted. 5 years of playing and I never felt compelled to spend money on loot boxes.

I swear battle passes have turned games into part time jobs where your paycheck is even more FOMO

I miss ow1. I enjoyed the lootboxes and the feeling of getting a legendary without spending money and everyone being able to get the skins they liked without ever feeling the need to spend money. Good old times in my opinion.

$20 for a legendary skin, especially for the year 1 stuff, is insane.

I will never not hate when a game adds a battlepass

Surprisingly OW1's lootbox system was actually good since they were so easy to get win 9 games you get 3 boxes and you get boxes from leveling up and giving out endorsements

I miss the loot boxes because even if I had a chance of getting what I want, at a certain point you can count on credits instead of items so I can use those credits to buy the items I want. They got rid of that and now the grind is a bit of a pain. Sure, I was playing almost daily to begin with but I wanna play my role, I wanna choose, not have the random challenges tell me I'm playing support today. I leveled up daily at least and that gave me a loot box every day, same in Apex Legends the gambling dopamine was a daily occurrence. Now, Overwatch 2 has none of that

One thing you left out was that the base legendries in Apex can be acquired for free in a reasonable amount of time. Apex gives a secondary currency from it's loot boxes. You can't use it to buy things in the shop or characters, but you can use it to buy base cosmetics of any rarity. While the BP cosmetics are mostly just recolored epics, the base legendries are pretty good and a dedicated player can unlock a few of them in a month.

If you don't get the battlepass then there is virtually no progression

I honestly already have all the cosmetics I want but I feel very bad for new players as they literally HAVE to pay for items, or a massive grind

Man people call the loot box system predatory but like in the 4 years I’ve played this game, I’m pretty sure I’ve never bought loot boxes. Playing this game for 4 years and then just having to spend ungodly amounts of money for cool cosmetics is such a punch to the nuts

it’s pretty funny how the entire gaming community did a 360 on loot box mechanics because companies didn’t want to be seen as shady and created new worse ways of unlocking things.

You have summarized the exact issue I've been dealing with the past week. I've been weighing if I can even complete the battle pass and it's seriously been dragging me down. I feel like I HAVE to play every day and when I don't or can't make time too, I genuinely feel terrible. Mentally but physically as well. It's why I've had to stop playing so many games in the past and could always come back to OW to get my competitive kick. I fear soon I might not be able to enjoy the game I've always loved, and I can't even load up number 1 because its dead (for now).

My biggest gripe with the new system is how it changed my way how I would play the game.

In OW1 I would play whatever character I want as long as I have fun. With the new daily/weekly challenge system, I would look up which mode/class/queue I still have to do and force myself to play in that way to complete all dailies. Basically, my motivation changed from intrinsic to extrinsic and I already know that I will burn out on OW2 and quit in the long run.

I really hate how the FOMO and the battle pass system becomes the standard monetization model for way too many games nowadays.

It is completely ridiculous. I'd rather pay $40 when i first get the game and rely on lootboxes than to have to grind through a bp AND buy any skins that weren't in the pass. It's the greediest possible answer they couldve had.

Honestly I just wish we could gain currency at a faster rate because we can only get 60 coins per week unlike overwatch 1 where you can 25 per game practically and that wasn’t even factoring in loot boxes. All I’d like is for us to be able to gain currency after playing games in certain roles, in the battle pass or even both at the same time.

Also battle pass exp being less Grindy after completing the daily challenges would be nice too

As someone who has played overwatch 1 since the beginning I always had time to daily since I was in High School. However, I just don't have time for it like that and I really appreciate you making that point! Work takes up majority of my life and there's nothing more frustrating realizing I can't finish a battle pass because I don't play enough. On top of that, I hate attempting to complete the challenges on my day off because it means that I don't really get to play what I want or how I want. A lot of the challenges that I see are based around winning games! Yes, there are some generic ones but loosing shouldn't prevent players from completing challenges. Somebody is always going to have to lose, that how the game works. It takes so much fun out of the game when I feel pressured to win in order to progress.

I really hope they make some more adjustments as the game progresses because right now it's frustrating and leaves me missing OW1

I really do want them to reevaluate their approach to monetizing OW2, and I dearly hope that if the upcoming Halloween events falls short of their expectations, they'll do exactly that. While I respect the decision to go F2P and I understand the financial incentive to monetize the game beyond the initial $30 price tag of OW1, it's just way too extreme right now. The sad fact is that the only way things are going to change is if people don't buy -- enough people that Blizzard takes a step back and thinks, 'Okay, we'll make more money if we lower the prices.' They need to get overwhelmingly negative PR and low turnouts or they're just going to keep ramping it up until the barrier to enjoying OW2 is so massive that it alienates anybody who isn't a full-blown whale.

The sad thing is that I really am happy to support the game. For as many hours of entertainment as it's provided me, spending $20 a month or so doesn't strike me as unreasonable. And knowing that monetization of this sort will encourage further development helps matters for me tremendously. It's just...too much right now. Way too much. I don't have a lens into their marketing department, but I really think that retaining the loyalty and love of their fans and making their artists' work more accessible to the average player will ultimately prove to be more profitable for them than this. But that all depends on what players are willing to pay.

another thing to mention is that the way accounts come distinct overtime in other games with the battle pass, is a hero will get enough different skins from different battlepasses to stand out, in overwatch there's already so many heroes that its highly unlikely that you'll see the same hero get a skin in a battle pass more then once every 5 seasons.

If you want to grind to get the legendary skins, you need to complete all weekly challenges for 32 weeks to get a single legendary skin. *Which means you need to grind for half a year to get a single legendary skin.*
