God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Review - The Final Verdict

Valhalla might not be the Ragnarok DLC most of us had expected, but it’s still an incredible addendum to the developer's acclaimed action-adventure game. Taking the form of a roguelite mode, it helps embellish the underlying strengths of Ragnarok’s combat better than even the base game itself was able to do, thanks to excellent implemented roguelite design and systems.

Add to the fact that this is a completely free DLC, and there’s every reason to play it.

As a huge Hades fan, this was sooo great to play through. Loved it! Definitely would be cool to see another GOW game with run options.

Story DLC still coming! And the story in this DLC sets everything up so beautifully. Literally turned a DLC mode into a commentary on men’s mental health. Even named main mission, “The Work.” 🔥 Masterful*

I feel this is his last outing as the main character. That in a sequel it would either be atreus coming for help, kratos going to help, or atreus causing something that he'd need to come back for. With his trauma addressed, what pain dies he have to show?

Roguelites and Roguelikes have become increasingly more popular. I would say they are far from “unapproachable” these days. With the huge success of games like Hades and Darkest Dungeon, it’s no wonder they chose this style of gameplay for the dlc, to really lean in to the heavy combat aspect that many original fans have been yearning for.

My recomendation on difficulty now that I have beaten it as an experienced GoW player. Start at the highest difficulty for you possible and as soon as you start to hear recycled dialog lower the difficulty. I ended up beating the DLC on normal for the final fight and enjoyed myself much more than just face grinding through on the most difficult. All around great couple of hours and the combat in new GoW is some of my favorite ever made. Thanks Santa Monica studios for being you!

It is so freaking good. It being FREE messes with the way i feel about DLC’s in general.
Also the “rogue like” but in this DLC fits perfectly with the story.

The dlc shows us that the Greek mythology was just better as a setting. A full game like that would be so great. Or even just a remake of the original trilogy
