I always over plan! This is my 28th year teaching and my 17th in third grade. Never gets old. Instead of giving kids busy work, I try to incorporate team-building and self promotive activities. It pays back big time over the long haul. It's pretty tiring those first few weeks, but I learn SO much about their varied gifts and traits that help with management! Good luck at your new grade level.

Same here! I have to do plans AND slides. I envy the folks who can just use their slides to plan. Listening as I am doing my slides for the week. Also I love the class helper name! Also when teaching procedures I always have kids model the wrong way and the right way. They get a good laugh out of do ing it.

Loved this video! I teach 3rd grade as well and I love reading First Day Jitters with my students. Then I have them write how they felt on the first day of school. This is a good way for me to see where they are in terms of writing! Can’t wait to see how your year goes!

Love your content!! You totally inspired me to start my own channel. Im a fellow third grade teacher and your plans look great! Two other fun activities I’ve enjoyed doing the first week have been…1. Friendship beads. Basically I buy clay that you can bake in the oven and you give each student a small piece of clay. Then students go around asking their classmates about each other. What’s your favorite animal? Etc. Once they’ve swapped info they have a bead mixed with everyone’s different colors. Then you make a little necklace with the bead.
2. Reading if I built a school and drawing/writing/brainstorming what they would add to a school If they made their own. Then pairing it with a little stem activity.

I love doing a me
/we activity with my third graders. I have a template I cut out to saw me on one side and we on other side when flipped
.I give students a few minutes to write their favorite things on the me side then I partner students and their partner writes similarities.
