Terahertz spectrum promises to offer a whole new level of applications for cellular-based use cases. One innovative application showing promise is to use frequencies in the Terahertz range to convey sensory signals to augment the usual audio and video, creating deeper virtual reality environments. But whilst the high frequencies permits vast data transfer, the downside is that attenuation and practical distances can be extremely short.

We discuss what exactly constitutes Terahertz communications, the likely use cases, scientific and technology-related challenges to its commercialisation, and how it can help realise the broader societal goals of 6G end-to-end systems.
