A Universal Vaccine May Be Closer Than You Think

After the last year, we’ve seen just how progressive we can be at developing a vaccine. Never before have we made one so efficiently. But COVID has done more than just spark the development of COVID-specific vaccines, it has advanced the entire industry. So what will the vaccines of the future look like?

(then hit the little 🔔 icon and select "all").

Vaccinology is a discipline that is positioned at the focal point of immunology, virology, microbiology, public health, economics, sociology, ethics, and even international diplomacy. So when one thinks about the future of vaccines, one has to think about each of these elements, the future of each of these elements. And one of the most exciting developments for the invention and distribution of vaccines is mRNA.

mRNA vaccines are, of course, the new kids on the block and they've been extraordinarily efficacious in protecting against COVID-19. And the thing that everyone says is that these vaccines were developed in such a short time, in a period of 11 months or so.

But the important point to remember is that it's not as if we didn't know about the mRNA vaccines prior to the emergence of COVID-19. There were teams of scientists working on this concept for years. It just so happened that when COVID-19 emerged, they were rapidly able to pivot and to use that technology, that investment that they had made over the last decade, to try and apply this to COVID-19.

But if we could pool everything we know about influenza viruses or the different kinds of coronaviruses and teach the immune system to look for more than just individual antigens, then we would bypass the need for these hyper-specific vaccines.

Smallpox used to kill millions. But a chance discovery led to the first vaccine, and a transformation in human health.

Infection-Induced Epigenetic Changes and Their Impact on the Pathogenesis of Diseases
Epigenetic modifications play a fundamental role in the regulation of cellular gene expression. In addition to their role in mediating short-term responses, some epigenetic marks can also be stably transmitted throughout cell divisions. Such mechanisms are of quintessential importance for the maintenance of cellular identity, and also convey a learning system that allows cells to respond and adapt to environmental changes. In recent years, infections have emerged as one of the triggers, which can profoundly alter epigenetic patterns.

Control of Viral Infections by Epigenetic-Targeted Therapy
Epigenetics is defined as the science that studies the modifications of gene expression that are not owed to mutations or changes in the genetic sequence. Recently, strong evidences are pinpointing toward a solid interplay between such epigenetic alterations and the outcome of human cytomegalovirus infection. Guided by the previous possibly promising experimental trials of human immunodeficiency virus epigenetic reprogramming, the latter is paving the road toward two major approaches to control viral gene expression or latency.

How come no one talks about side effects? Where's the information? I want to consent INFORMED.

"One shot to rule them all?" Interesting choice of words and that's only one of the many puns I found....Interesting for sure.

Could we get this guy to narrate every science show/doc, such a calming voice

This comment section has convinced me that humanity is ultimately doomed. Ignorance and confirmation bias will ruin us.

How could you do that without making the immune system overly protective?

I am wondering, how viruses will evolve to respond to these universal vaccines.

For years alchemists sought a universal solvent that could dissolve anything ...then came the relization ..we need to ultimate container to hold a the universal solvent that won't be dissolved by the universal solvent . then if we create the container to hold the universal solvent we don't have a universal solvent anymore .

I really think that a lot of anti-vaccine sentiment is as a result of a fear of needles and shots. I think that taking that method of delivery out of the equation would make vaccines more acceptable to some part of the population.

One issue I am seeing here is that we still don't fully understand the roll that viruses may play within our own microbiota. It has been found that some harmful gut bacteria are kept in check by viruses. If we train our cells to eradicate all viruses, it may actually have some unintended and very negative side effects on us.

My 2 cents - I love vaccines i think its the best thing we have discovered in the medic field. Having said that i have 2 concerns.
This vaccines are a temporary fix like an aspirin and sustains a model motivated by capital gain of constant injections over a period of time ( 1 year-ish )
When something is made with urgency, desperation, dire need, monetary incentives and lack of extensive research to spot potential human error, the result is normally a product that will end up having UNEXPECTED consequences.
It also surprises me that you cannot INSURE yourself against evident side effects of vaccines, they seem to be protected by an IRONCLAD law of take it or leave it.
AGAIN i am already vaccinated. But i also think we are putting too much trust and breaking laws that hold accountable the people who make science in exchange of capital gain. We should support more science without the incentive of money. Science should be a study without the taint of greed.

How can we be sure that those epigenetic changes are never encountered in normal health? Is there a small risk of developing an autoimmune disease?

Sounds like a few autoimmune conditions might be created from an universal vaccine. Also, the idea of mRNA instructions reminds me of politics. I can't imagine companies wouldn't add in extra instructions into the mRNA that could somehow create profit for them, the same way politicians tag on extra stuff into bills when they negotiate them. All very interesting stuff.
