In director Richard Stanley's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror short story, a meteor falls to earth and lands on the property of a New England family — its increasingly unhinged patriarch played by the one-and-only Nicolas Cage — with insidious, delirious, and psychedelic results.
When an iridescent meteorite plummets from outer space and into the property and foundations of a remote New England estate, a malignant force begins to insidiously permeate the lives of an unassuming family. The effects are gradual — time begins to dilate, nature assumes an otherworldly hue — and all things bright and beautiful eventually mutate and corrupt under its influence. So proceeds this eerie adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, one of horror's most haunting, here presented by the enigmatic South African filmmaker Richard Stanley.

Returning to Midnight Madness 29 years after his hypnotic killer-robot fandango Hardware first premiered in the section, Stanley summons his uniquely hallucinogenic sensibilities to envelope his endearing characters in surreal, incremental dread. At first, their domestic bliss is quietly fraught with an undercurrent of unnerving tension, before eventually boiling over into delirious, acid-fuelled terror.

The patriarch of this doomed brood is none other than Nicolas Cage, continuing his recent renaissance as a midnight-movie staple with an increasingly unhinged performance that reliably ricochets among every technique in the Stanislavski playbook. The rest of the ensemble, which includes Joely Richardson and Tommy Chong, play effective foils to Cage's delirium, but the real star of the show is the alien entity itself. This all-consuming, dispassionate menace manifests itself in a series of grotesque, body-horror, and psychedelic spectacles, worthy of its ineffable literary origins.

Richard is an absolute legend, he deserves so much more attention. He was onto the whole cosmic horror thing way before it came back into mainstream, and he has such a deep understanding of it all. Hope to see the movie in theaters soon

Richard and Nic deserve a standing ovation just for being themselves. Great looking cast! Nic is taking his throne back and welcome back Richard!

Thanks to SpectreVision for bringing interesting filmmakers within genre and art to the forefront.

I dare to say that it’s the best HPL’s rendering so far. Kudos to the whole team! Can’t wait for the Dunwich horror !

"i would want to thank the dark gods of the lovecraft mythos" watching the film and hearing this just proves how Stanley genuinely loves and cares about representing lovecraft lore and put real thought into it. amazing

Only 8 seconds in, and I feel the surrealism taking hold.
Is Nic Cage in the house… or is the house in him? Could the entire cosmos be an enormous Nicholas Cage?

What a phenomenal production. The actors gave their best and enjoyed their time, the director gave his best and enjoyed his time. It’s rare for the main players in a film production team to get along so swimmingly, and much less produce such a unique film as this one in the process. Well done all. Everyone involved with the making of this film should be proud of themselves.

Saw it last Friday at the Lovecraft film festival and As a Lovecraftian fan I loved it. It has everything you need in Lovecraft film. Cosmic horror, practical effects, Cage going crazy, and alpacas! Public theater screening should go around in January after the fest tours are over and blu ray hopefully around October

I saw this at the Lovecraft film festival and my movie was showing there as well! I even met Richard...gave him a Creepy TV sticker and business card. I felt like a winner.

I really liked this movie. Sure, it's kind of a B-flick, but it's a gem and the cast does a great job. I really like how Nicolas Cage eagerly jumps into strange and obscure roles. He's got that Jeremy Irons ability to make every movie he stars in just that much better.
