Hirokazu Yasuhara - How to make a game 'fun'

There are so many fun games nowadays. And it is getting easier to make games by using various engines and tools. But it is hard to make them “fun” without game design, like as people can’t build high risen building without architecture. I think each game designer has his or her own theory of design. So I would like to talk a part of my game design theory which is “How to make a game “fun”.

In my opinion, Sonic 3 and knuckles is the greatest platformer of all time. Mr. Yasuhara is the main reason for its greatness. He deserves to be more well known.

10:15 - Habit, finding differences

10:35 - Habit, recognition

11:05 - Habit, nervous about restrictions

11:50 - Restriction examples -> anxious/dramatic

13:00 - Sum up of Habits; moving, uniqueness, restriction

14:40 - 4 sub-kinds of fun; competition, chance, roleplay, vertigo - they work in mixes, so the explanation has no bullet points, but it is VERY good imho

19:30 - Two kinds of emotions; experiences (fun/scary), rational (interesting)

23:10 - Abstract general game loop

24:40 - Abstract general game loop with suggestions/examples and advice

This man made some of my most beloved games. Jak 3 will forever be a part of my heart. He sounds like a college professor, My college professor. Sheesh, it a good thing I'm used to this because he's boring but so great.

I think of this talk at the beginning of every new project, and before designing core features in games. Love his way of thinking.

Despite his slight stuttering, and quiet voice, it was a very good presentation!

(Anyone else notice the person at 17:38?)

I wish they did it in japanese and subtitled it so he could speak with more confidence, it's quite difficult to understand what he's trying to communicate at times

thank you for your presentation, I understand how difficult it is when you are talking not in your mother tongue. I think I have some ideas to improve my game :)
