I cried. My great grandfather was in the battle for Moscow. One of the most famous ones. And then he was ready to go home to Kazakhstan, but Chinese-Japanese conflict was happening and Soviet Union sent all the Asians they could collect to that side. At some point he realized that they are near north Kazakhstan and he slipped the message “I’m alive. “Name and address” and asked a kid to throw it into mailbox. And he did.
