Easter started out as an Anglo Saxon pagan festival to commemorate the Goddess Eostre. Eostre represented new life and hence the association with eggs. The Easter Bunny was originally a Hare. At this time of year here in England Hares can be seen jumping up as part of their mating display. The church set the date of the crucifixion to take over our Easter celebrations.
Incidentally the Latin Cross Christians worship at this time was not invented until the 4th century. Then as now there is a shortage of heavy timber in Israel and so the Romans used two poles forming an X.
But in the rest of the empire they used just a single heavy vertical log.
