For that type obstacles is best SNOW+LOCK+ESP OFF. Because ESP system will not cut down engine power when detects wheel slip and in SNOW+LOCK mode brake traction control works less aggresive and only equalize wheels rotation, not stop the slipping wheel. And all modes except LOCK reduces torque transfered to the rear axle when cornering.

Vitara's are unexpectedly good off road, and running them on road with extra load (XL) tyres makes the handling sharp. An excellent example of how a bitza car made of the best components from different places can be superior: awd system designed in Bristol UK by an aerospace company, Renault gearbox made tough for the original Peugeot diesel engine and towing, Toyota 4 banger petrol engine manufactured in Wales UK (look on google maps right on the south border of Wales - you will find it), and assembled in Hungary where they have a history of innovative engineering.
