My neighbor recently started a woman's group where we meet once a month to learn at least 1 homestead-y thing. We've done fermenting, local foraging, canning...all sorts of stuff. It has been such a blessing and comfort. The goal is to expand our knowledge and grow community.

Rather than prepping, I prefer to call it “building resiliency.” When you are equipped to handle potential problems in multiple different ways, you are resilient.

This, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is what wisdom looks like! Thank you Jess!

Love what you are saying - love “prepping” myself but living a life unafraid. Prep for community and abundance, not fear and isolation! ❤

I am almost 50. I grew up homesteading and very very poor and then became an orphan which took me out of that life. I got an accounting degree and lived in the suburbs. I had a hole in my soul for those years and the only way I could bandage it was gardening in any little lot I had, I felt/feel that I needed to retain the skills of being able to grow and preserve my own food just in case I needed to fall back on that to eat. this is probably because it was these skills that fed me as I grew up. I have left accounting and I am now in North Carolina working my homestead full time and feeling more fulfilled then ever. exhausted but fulfilled. Thanks for the post!

The one thing I noticed on YouTube channels for homesteaders at proclaim their Christian faith is that they tend to have so much peace when they see all the corruption in the world. They just don't have the "spirit of fear, " but they have wisdom to be prepared. That's one of the reasons I love your channel! You encourage people to not be afraid when the world encourages them to be so. Going at this with peace in our hearts is so important. Thank you for your message!❤

Jess, I met you at Baker Creek last year. I had told you of when my daughter was sick and how the garden was my solice, on the bad days and when I wasn't able to leave my home.
You did a video on "Doing it scared".... honestly, my motivation is my kids and being self sufficient. However, your video about doing it scared motivated me to 'retire' from nursing and make my garden my job.
I paid off my house almost 3 years ago and I spent 2 years buying things I needed for my planned retirement. About 1 year after my conversation with you, I finally did it!
Thank you for being so positive and forthcoming with everything.... and for gracefully admitting that this life is not easy.
Have a fantastic day!

Instead of calling it prepping, why don’t we call it getting back to the basics of life. Getting back for being more self sufficient and prepared for anything that happens in life. Preparing to be in control of our own life and not giving that power to someone else. Enjoying and taking care of what has been given to us. We should not be preparing for the big disaster, but be prepared as we do life. I totally agree with you Jess. If we are driven by fear, we will not last. I’m trying to prepare to be healthy, and live a healthy, happy life with my family more independently and free. Blessings to you too!🌸

Your thoughts match mine completely. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and heart. I appreciate you! To lose peace is to lose everything. Peace in our heart, in our homes and in our relationships. God is not the author of confusion but the giver of hope.

Jess, just thinking about your farm and channel name Roots and Refuge. You have been providing a space of refuge for those of us that don't "fit" into extreme criteria, we are here because of the beauty in simplicity and rooting into what is calling us. You inspire us with your passion of gardening, stewarding the land, managing a household of boys, and loving unbound by "how society says we should care for others". You are providing space for those that find beauty and joy in the small things and share that with others. I hope you see this space you have created for us and feel that you belong! Wish we had some YouTube channels amongst us to return some light!

I exactly feel the same way you do. We prep and are intentional with what we do around our farm. Ultimately, it is GOD we rely upon, but feel it's our duty to do our part on this earth. Hope your wrist heals up soon. Sending you happy vibes! Jewels Ballman

I think people have forgotten the empty grocery store shelves and they're spending everything they make on just barely surviving. Treading water with just their nose above the surface. My heart breaks for families that are struggling.

Oh Jess!! What a beautiful video. Yes, there is no need for fear. As my mom used to say, God is in His Heaven and all’s right with the world. We just need to keep our eyes on Heaven and prepare calmly and peacefully for dealing with the day to day human condition - life here on Earth. I love how one of your viewers referred to being prepared as building resiliency. Yes indeed! Love you, Mary ❤🤗❤️
