Jaremi Carey / Phi Phi O'Hara

One of the co-chairs of Drag Out the Vote is Jaremi Carey, the man of a thousand faces, one the most prominent one being that of his character, Phi Phi O’Hara, from RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Season 4 and All Stars 2). Jaremi has been, how do we put it gently, very vocal about his Drag Race experience, the reality of reality TV, and even Ru herself. But the fact remains, Phi has a huge fan base that was there before Drag Race and has stayed loyal to this day.

Actually, I can’t figure it out. He doesn’t look at the camera, there’s a feeling of avoidance. No eye contact. I’m not sure phi phi is comfortable with himself right now or really knows who or what he wants. I think he wants fame, and attention, but I don’t think he’s happy. I wouldn’t be either. He was a whipping boy, and really good villain, for both of his seasons on drag race. I don’t think he realizes the reason he was such good tv was because he had a temper and talked shit. Started fights, showed us the consequences of being a little too outspoken. I just want to tell him, don’t retire phi phi, reinvent her instead. Make her such a villain, so over the top, really own it and be all those instincts, that people would love to hate her. It’s such a great role if you lean into it. Come on Phi Phi, you can do it. Be a larger than life bitchy queen. It’s a classic role in gay history. You wouldn’t be the first. Joan Crawford, Bette Davis for example. The more bitchy the better. Or, walk away altogether and find something new. But you’re a natural, so there’s that, may as well make it a thing. I think phi phi wants confrontation on some level, but on another it overwhelms her also and she recoils. Just exaggerate the worst phi phi possible.
