DIY Air Cleaner

The best way to protect you and your family during smoke events is to stay indoors and keep the indoor air as clean as possible by closing windows and doors and filtering your indoor air. Watch the video to see how you can make yourself an air cleaner with a box fan and some high-efficiency rated filters (Watch one of our amazing regional staff members show you how). If you’re planning to be outside when the air is unhealthy, check with your health care provider on the use of N95 respirators.

FYI- YOU SHOULD have the entire box off the floor at least three feet bc of the dust hair etc settling will make the filters fuller way faster than needed. Vacuum will handle the floor

2 filters stack together behind the fan is also very effective. And then they said you can make your own filter and not have to buy filters anymore

Great idea. I’m going to do this for a small grow space.

Bonus points if you put that pointed at your ACS air return so that your double filtering and positively pressurizing the return side

I’ve been using just one filer on a box fan for awhile but gonna try this! Thanks—Why cover corners?

15:23 DIY doesn’t use less electricity, it’s just more energy efficient per CADR. But the CADR is much higher, so your total energy usage is also higher.

And when the filters need changing...dust will fly all over when fan is off ...and bumped. Will probably need to take outside so not to spread dust from the filters. I just put a filter on the back of my fan and works great.

I used 5: 20×20×2 ( Merv 11) with 4 vertical legs + square 20" box fan 3 speeds ===> more clean air blows ❤ .

Loudest air purifier ever! Worth it in a pinch.

People asking about covering the corners, ideally you want to cut out a shroud to reduce the diameter of the fan. If your box fan is 20” you want to get a pice of cardboard and cut maybe a 17 or 18 inch diameter hole in it and place it over your fan. Reason is the perimeter of the box fan is actually installing air which defeats the purpose of the filters.

So what if I have three 1inch filters!? Will that work or should I get 2incch?

I would either figure out how to place some legs on the bottom filter or delete it for a thick piece of cardboard, because that filter isn't actually filtering anything.

Does this filter mold, mycotoxins, VOCS better than an air purifier? Thanks

For folks saying to simply buy a purifier, be careful on which ones you buy as some have harsh chemicals, such as lead.

How where would you buy the materials to make those filters yourself at and for the home vent to?

P2.5 and smaller won't get filtered in that furnace filter.

shouldnt be the fan blow towards inside? to ensure that it sucks air and blows through the filter?

Good job making it with 5 2” filters and elevating it, though I would have taped dow rods to it for legs to make it higher off the ground. I don’t thing people understand that they’re losing about half the CFM of the fan making these with 4 1” filters MERV 14 filters. If if you circulate the air in the room twice as many times per hour you’ll filter a LOT more out of the air with 5 2” MERV 13 filters than you will with 4 1” MERV 14 filters.

People, if you do opt 1” filters, at least use the Filtrete 1900 and elevate the box to use 5 of them. This filter has the lowest static pressure when clean and when dirty out of all MERV 13 filter. Otherwise, it’s not worth having a 70 decibel noise maker in your house. Oh yeah, more CFM will quiet down the fan a little too.
