Dolly wasn’t a big star when she started working with Porter Wagoner, and he always felt that he was the one who deserved the credit for her success. This is why Porter went on to sue Dolly for millions of dollars after she quit his show. Dolly quit The Porter Wagoner Show in 1974, and the two managed to remain on friendly terms for a number of years before Dolly’s success became too much for her jealous former employer to deal with. By the end of the 1970s, Porter had made the decision to sue Dolly, believing that he was the main reason that she had become a superstar.

Understandably, Dolly was upset at the lawsuit being hurled at her by the man that she had formerly trusted. She and Porter had been incredibly close, and there were even rumors that the two were involved in an affair during the filming of the show. Even despite the lawsuit, during the late '80s, when the IRS came after Porter for millions of dollars in back taxes (similar to what happened to Willie Nelson), he was forced to sell the rights to all of his songs to raise the money that he needed. Dolly purchased Porter's songs, and then once his tax bill was settled, and the IRS could no longer lay claim to his property, she gave them back to him. As a songwriter herself, Dolly always felt that songwriters should own and control their own material.

No, I think Porter was just very jealous of Dolly so how else could he try and get to her but though money. Everybody is just so money hungry it's not even funny.
She showed who she really was by not responding to his insults. Just went on with her life.

He was jealous. Maybe he was infatuated with her and was hoping she'd want him, too. It didn't sit well with him that he, inadvertently, provided her a means for the fame he wanted for himself. Suing her wasn't about money, it was about ego. In spite of his ill will, she proved her gratitude to him, over and over again. She handled him biblically. Like Joseph, she earned her position in spite of poor treatment. She didn't return evil for evil, instead turned the other cheek. She's a strong character.

I have to say, I grew up watching Porter Wagoner show. My father, even knew Porter a little as my father was a sometimes musician in Poplar Bluff, Mo. I also have to admit that I really didn't think Dolly Parton was that good a singer, at first. But after a few years, she started proving me, and the whole world wrong! Looking back on it, I now am of the opinion that, if anything, Porter Wagoner was holding her back! Dolly Parton left and became a World Phenomenon! One thing, about the song Jolene; Dolly Parton has been ranked as one of the top 10 sexiest and most beautiful women on Earth since the 1970s! Who the hell could take ANYTHING away from her! List is pretty darn short. Raquel Welch, Ann Margaret, Sophia Loren, young Bardot, a couple of others, but it's a pretty short list! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Dolly!

She was on there from 1967 to 1974.She gave him enough years. Problem was that she was making him money, and he didn’t want to see that leave! She wanted to go solo and make a bigger name for herself

Beautiful singing couple, love there singing, lots of sad songs. I believe they were very close, hurt him a lot when she left him. I admire her for seeing him til the end, grateful to him. When I was a new wife and mom we would watch Dolly and Porter on his show, we loved it. Good sad ending!
