Questioned during a home affairs select committee, Suella Braverman appeared unsure of how people from countries outside UK schemes could apply for asylum in the UK.

Tory MP Tim Loughton asked how a 16-year-old from a 'hypothetical' country in Africa who was facing persecution could make an asylum application here or elsewhere to come to the UK. Braverman repeatedly said that a person in those circumstances could do it through the 'safe and legal' routes which are available but wasn't able to elaborate on how that would work for people who cannot come to the UK to apply and cannot do it where they are located. She eventually called on Matthew Rycroft, permanent secretary at the Home Office, who acknowledged that there are places in the world where asylum applications cannot be filed.

A Home Secretary that doesn’t know how people get into this country legally. Absolutely unbelievable, she doesn’t know how someone, anyone can get into the country legally. What an absolute joke. Why do MP’s get jobs they’re not qualified to do

These people's confidence and arrogance outweighs their ability.

If I answered that way at a job interview, would you offer me the job?

Could not believe this when I saw it on TV earlier. She completely embarrassed herself, and it wouldn't be the first time.

Inept, unqualified and ignorant. And the cherry on the cake 'not my fault'

But let's remember the words of Rishi - This government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level

I am increasingly shocked at the obvious ignorance and lack of qualification for such high and important offices in this country by people in such positions.

You used to be able to go to the UK Embassy or Consulate, but they privatized the application for a visa (on what ever grounds) and it is now dealt with online - and 9 times out of ten rejected online (after having paid the fee of course).

Braverman is no Nadine Dorries. What is shocking here is the Elephant In The Room question is not one for which she has prepared an adequate answer, and yet it's a question that should be being asked again and again and again and again and again.

It is not illegal to enter the Uk and claim asylum. There is no other way.

How can she leads a department, if she does not know the basics. Her leadership knowledge is appalling.

Staggering.Thank goodness for the work done by these committees.Just about the only part of government that gets on with the job, where cross-party talents are shared and conniving for re-election is not the principal task.
