Angola: Billionaire Isabel dos Santos Loses Appeal For Access to Frozen Assets | Firstpost Africa

Angola's Isabel dos Santos on Monday (October 31) lost an appeal to overturn an order freezing up to $778 million of her assets as part of a lawsuit at London's High Court. Dos Santos, Africa's first female billionaire, whose father Jose Eduardo dos Santos ruled Angola for 38 years until 2017, is being sued by Angolan telecoms operator Unitel in a case related to unpaid loans. Dos Santos has denied these charges and claimed she is a victim of a "campaign of oppression" by Angola's current government.

The big question is whether Portugal is going to hand back the money to the people of Angola or is Portugal keeping the money for themselves?

I just wish there was a way for all these funds to be returned to Angola (Afrika) in the interim. Who is this money working for at present (interest earned and such)?

We do not want aid, we need our resources (money) to work for us.

As an Angolan, I must say Isabel´s assets being frosen and Her arrest is really just the tip of the Iceberg as many other corrupt Generals are still at large and living the best lives while many Angolans suffer in Poverty.

She could've went around every poor house and given them 20, 000 dollars. Now she has nothing, 800, 000 gone. She didn't help a single person. I just, i will never understand this world and why people are the way they are. Same with every rich person, do they not realize they could literally change people's lives and still not miss a beat?

The most important thing i got from this is "London's" High court; for the UK to be involved, it means those assets are in the UK... $700+ Million of looted wealth could not even be hidden in the country it was looted from.
Nigeria's former head of state Sani Abacha is officially reported to have looted $5-8 Billion dollars of Public funds during his tenure, all of which went to European Bank accounts, 1990s inflation rate by the way (Abacha was Head of State for just 4+ years).
Nigeria's yearly budget during the "90s was "officially" around $8 Billion; so Abacha actually looted about 1/4th the entire budget meant for about 100 Million people during his tenure, and took it to a completely different Continent... That was just his by the way, we're not even talking about the countless other Politicians even doing worse; We're f*cked.

It's hard to say, but all the companies owned by Isabel were doing much better when she was in charge than they are now, the government is bankrupting these companies.

The international community needs to prioritize stability over reform. Seizing foreign assets can damage diplomatic relations, and foreign meddling through other means (like the competition between France and Russia in certain parts of Africa) also lead to chaos.
