Thank you Chuck for a great review. You most certainly changed my mind regarding this tool. I have been trying to decide if I wanted to purchase this tool for some time. After watching your review I no longer want one. Tool set up seems too time consuming. I prefer my tool ready to work when I drop it on the tool post. Again, thank you for sharing.

Always interested in specific insert information and performance. With my budget I am especially interested in the cheaper ones that still give good performance. Give Howie a big hug from me. Doug

I think it will be a very useful tool. I have not used anything as adjustable as it, and interested to see what configuration you find to work best for day to day turning. I'm sure it will get you out of some tight spots on occasion. I think you have a winner. Thanks for sharing, I will keep my eyes peeled for one, as i might like to try one.

Got to say, the method for securing the carbide insert is brilliant. Nothing worse than dropping one of those tiny screws in your chip pan

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Chuck. I DID learn something.

The adjustability of this thing is fascinating, you had mentioned it in Harold's talk. Very cool tool.

That is sort of the Swiss army knife of tool holders. Very fancy. Thanks for the video.

I appreciate your doing the video, I've been drooling over these for 3 months. Doesn't look like the adjustability is worth having to do all the adjustments. I think I'm better off with separate tooling. Thanks for saving me money and frustration

Hi Chuck. I got your stickers yesterday - thanks.
That is an interesting tool. Should be use full for odd turning projects.
I am filming a tool holder project right now. I think you will like it.

Thanks for the video. You can use several inserts with the AXA 22, I use TNMG 321 and they work fine. If you keep the angle in the middle of the three positions the tool will remain at center height in all positions although that may not work with negative inserts. Also carbide inserts like higher speeds and heavier cuts, I have cut 0.200" with mine without problems but I used the solid Aloris holder (see my next paragraph). For light cuts in gummy metals I use the Diamond Tool Holder with HSS and cutting oil.

Your compound is too high for the AXA 22, you can not put a shim under the Aloris to raise it because it will still bottom out on the compound. What you can do is is make a solid replacement for the compound (search out Rob Renz and Stephan Gotteswinter they made them). If you make a solid replacement for the compound make it lower than the where the top of the compound sits so the Aloris will be lower and you will have enough room for the AXA 22. This is what I did to fit the AXA 22 because it is such a versatile holder and I really wanted to adapt it to my lathe. The solid base really makes the lathe more robust especially on these light tool room lathes.

I long ago dismissed this tool as just another gimmick. However, I did not know about the adjustable rake feature, that could be useful in itself. I would go for it at $60, but not $250.
Thanks for showing this tool.

Yes. I would like you to cover to cove the inserts more. Your video was
out of focus. I just got one of these off eBay so this was really
helpful. Also, I have to verify, but I think if the angle is on the center mark, your center height does not change.

However, if you think about it, since it's negative rake, it *IS* going to change if you move it. I believe a positive insert may allow you to change the angle while keeping the height the same, but would need a flat swiveling insert, if that makes sense. Negative and Positive inserts typically require a different tool holder. This seems like too much fiddle-faddle. I haven't had a real need that I need to change the angle of the insert. All of mine are fixed and I turn the tool post.

Thanks for sharing! It looks like a good idea in Theory but not in practical.

Maybe 30 years ago, possibly more, I bought an Enco holder like this in a BX size for my South Bend. The difference, which is great, is that it has one movable insert cartridge per end. So it’s really goo for rough and finishing cuts. Just flip the holder around. I think it cost $130 back then. Unfortunately, by the time I decided to buy another, they discontinued to for the single cartridge one, which I decided not to get (I should have).

I don’t understand why the tool height varies as you turn it around. That doesn’t happen for the Enco. I just checked. It’s a neutral. The cartridge isn’t inclined downwards towards the end as in the Aloris. Yeah, the too, height varying makes sense. But then, the entire angle of the insert changes as you turn the cartridge around. That destroys the geometry of the insert.

Why don’t you just change the angle of the compound so that the tool post is more parallel to its edge and the tool holder won’t hit? You don’t really have to have the compound at an angle unless you’re threading or want the cut to be less than the marked values on the dial.

It’s a combination of a positive insert with a negative tool holder. The insert isn’t cutting at the correct angle. Additionally, it needed a greater depth of cut. You’re just skimming the workpiece.

The problem with that holder is that if you don’t adjust the rake properly, nothing will work correctly. The theory with that holder is that as you change the angle of the cartridge, where the tip height rises either way around pointing straight out, the rake adjustment brings the tip back to height as it tilts the tool. But, it’s a pain. I prefer the neutral version Enco had.

Seems to me that this tool would be well suited to users who have employed a solid tool post (see what robrenz has done - "The solid tool post mount"). This tool would allow some cuts with the fixed QCTP that would otherwise require putting the compound back on the lathe.

The rake will change the tool height when rotating the tip. Neutral rake should not change height.

You mentioned finally obtaining some inserts that worked well on stainless steel. ? What were they ?

Wouldn't you need to set the rake the opposite direction when using the positive insert?
