It's quite simple why banks stocks sold off, while their earnings rose. Traders in Banks will always take positions against consensus position, in so doing wipe out the rest of the retail traders. This is how they make money. Banks can see the full book position, while retail traders are at the mercy of these banks.

People are negative on Banks because they can't see past 1 quarter, this is the opportunity to pick them up on the cheap. This is the moment Buffet etc. always talk about in buying the best low. I loaded up on WFC personally, good luck with whatever you pick.
