My grandfather moved out of the house he rented when the landlord raised the rent from $6/month to $8/month back in the 1930s. His disability payments were $10/month from gas, shell-shock and trenchfoot induced arthritis from serving as an infantryman in WW1. He could only work part time. The local grocer hired him part time to do deliveries until he was finally able to get a civil service job as a janitor at the VA hospital in Amarillo, TX. The family stayed in a trailer for my father's last year of school. He quit school at age 17 to join the Navy. My father bought his parents a house with his Navy pay. He didn't earn much, either.
