Back in 2008 with my friend Thanasis, for our thesis we built a 3-phase linear induction motor. It is powered by a 42Vac 3-phase supply. A small electronic circuit with a microcontroller (PIC18f4550) is used with relays to change the direction of movement. In each end of the rail there are IR optical switches. These switches are used to detect that the motor reached the end of the rail and change the direction of movement.
The entire system is made from aluminum frames that are used for home windows and the stator is made from transformer parts.
