I was also tempted to try Sweetwater’s gear exchange, seem it might be a better option than reverb

Had a bad experience selling a strat to a “dealer “instead of a player on reverb.I sold this guy a 15yo mim strat which was in good condition. when the scumbag received my guitar, he pulls the old scam of “oh you didn’t tell me about this flaw on it or this is not an original part on it “BS. Basically telling me the guitar was a POS, which it clearly wasn’t and had me refund him $100 back to him for his “troubles “. I wasn’t the only one that fell victim to this as this is a common scam on reverb where they will pay more for the guitar, but when they receive it, they will tell you everything that’s apparently wrong with it when you sold it to them and that’s how they get their discount, classic bait and switch scam

Feel ya on that... Reverb is definitely not the company it once was.

Hi! I just went through something similar in that a buyer basically abused the return system and rented my gear and forced a refund. I was ignored by Reverb and my rights as a seller were violated. I am going to file a complaint with the FTC and encourage anyone who has had similar experiences to do the same.

Reverb is owned by Etsy and they day that purchase went though was the death of Reverb being a great place to sell and buy gear. Their customer service went to shit. Reverb put out an article about vintage drum machines a few years ago, and I owned one, and though now would be a good time to sell it. It sold instantly and I shipped the same day for about $3000. The buyer claimed it was the wrong unit. I pointed him to the listing and the Reverb article and then he filed a demand for a refund anyway. Reverb said I sent him the wrong unit. I pointed Reverb to their own article boasting about this unit and they still said I had to refund him. I got Akai customer support on the phone and they passed me to a tech that worked there since the 80s and he laughed and said Reverb is being ridiculous and sent me an email from Akai saying it is the same unit. Reverb did not care and sided with the buyer. Basically if a buyer has no clue what they are buying, Reverb will demand a refund. Funny side note, I found the buyer on gearsluts (gear space now 🙄) asking users there to help him understand what he bought and they were flaming him saying why did you buy something you don’t know what it is or how to use it? I even sent Reverb to that thread and yet they still demanded I refund him or they would charge my card to do it without my permission. Idiots.

Let’s talk about what else sucks about Reverb:

1. They take 8%. Eight freaking percent!!! And then with that 8% they are offering minimal support for when transactions go wrong (which happens often, as you know). Even back in 2017, they were moving $1.2M of gear daily, meaning they take around $100k daily from their 8% cut. For 100 G’s a day the best they can offer is a text chat that puts you on hold for hours?

2. You can only sell $600 worth of gear a year before you get taxed by Uncle Sam. Better off with Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and other local services where govt does not get a cut. REVERB SUCKS!!!!

As a drummer I hear ya on every level. And why does Reverb even allow a "sale" bid to a new member who isn't yet approved to purchase anything on their site? Stupid policy that actually hurts that seller's product, because it appears as sold to all other potential buyers and then reposted as not yet would make any legitimate buyer suspicious, and devaluing a good item.

I feel you. Just sold something in great/working condition, and the buyer didn't do his homework and couldn't get the item to work/didn't know how to work the item. He caused a huge stink and escalated it to reverb. I ended up just accepting the return/refund to get him to leave me alone. My fellow musicians out there - just sell locally, avoid the hassle! Sucks because up until now I had good experiences selling things there. Never again.

Glad I watched this ... Came on YouTube to learn how to sell on Reverb and now I'm seriously reconsidering. Off to watch the sequel video you posted a few months ago.

How and when do you know you’ve received your money from a sale? Does it come before or after you ship the item? I’d love to speak with you on the phone if I could?? Thank you sir!!

i don't trust buyers anyway. They lie about the quality of the product, claim it was damged on they got an empty box, etc. Also, as a buyer, I always got scammed. mint guitars came in with top cracks, dents, filthy, and smelled like puke. The selling sites suck, and most buyers and sellers suck. Those of us who are honest just have to skip it.

I sold a microphone on reverb, they ordered last night, I sent it out today, and then they said they refunded the buyer and shut down my account. I’ve sold about 5 items on there, no problem. They won’t allow me to have my account back, and they already refunded the buyer even though I already shipped it. Hours later they told me to go back to the post office and get it back…it’s 5:30, the post office closed at 5. I wanted to message the buyer, but I can’t log into my account at all. So I’m pretty sure I’m out a microphone and money. Sorry for the rant, just frustrated. @reverb

About three years ago, i was selling mostly but buying a few items as well on Reverb. The only guitars I was selling were good, middle of the road guitars, between 900 and 1700 bucks. I sold about 20 guitars in a year and NEVER got my asking price after taxes, fees and sodomy. It always wound up, I'd have to suitcase at least a hundred bucks, even more sometimes. After i sold a Les Paul for 1500 and received 1365, plus had to pay for insured shipping, i lost money on the guitar, i closed my account. Screw them.

I have heard similar situations with Reverb. Not surprised at your frustration.

It seems they don't care about buyers or sellers. I just can't get a hold of anyone, email reply says it won't be sent to anyone. Phone is just a messages and says have a good day. Moronic chat machine then waited 2 hours for a "chat agent".. then I was done waiting. What the hell!

As a buyer I’ve only had problems with sellers that are under the impression that they are the powerful OZ.

I had an idiot "buy" something from me, then refuse to pay for it. He changed his mind after buying it. I've never had that happen to me on any other selling platform whatsoever. And he was a douchebag about it at the end.
